Driving Lesson Tips for Beginner

driving lesson tips for beginner

Learning to drive takes time, money and commitment – so it’s essential to get the best from your lessons. Below are six simple tips to help get you going.

Be punctual.

It’s important to arrive early to give yourself plenty of time to get to know the location. If you're late then the test can't go ahead. You don't want to be rushed when you're doing your test – it just doesn't help.

Wear proper shoes.

Avoid wearing heels as it’s difficult to get the leverage you’ll need to operate the pedals. Boots or trainers with thick soles aren’t a good idea either as it makes it difficult to feel the clutch bite. Avoid flip-flops because they can slide off too easily. And don’t drive without shoes.

Don't worry about mistakes.

This is probably the first time you're driving so you're not going to get things right first time. Concentrate on what you're seeing ahead at that very moment instead of looking back at what’s already happened.

Ask questions.

You will basically be expected to operate the controls while the car is turned off and to listen to the instructor. Make sure you ask the instructor to repeat anything you do not understand as this will help when it comes to actually driving the car.

Relax, be confident.

The process of learning driving techniques such as steering, maneuvering or starting uphill can be pretty easy if you have confidence. Your instructor is there to help you master all these techniques. The instructor usually has dual controls so in case anything goes wrong, he can take full control of the car.

Have regular lessons.

If possible keep your lessons regular and try to aim for two hours a week behind the wheel. This will help you progress consistently, boosting your confidence, whilst not allowing time to forget what you’ve already learnt and maximise the time spent with your instructor.
